Small Business Experience

For the past 17 years my wife and I have owned and operated Prairie View Prevention Services. I am currently the Vice President/CFO. (www.prairieview.net) I have many concerns for the issues of small businesses because I work through those issues every day.

Prairie View is accredited by the State of South Dakota for Prevention, Early Intervention and Out Patient Services. All of our services are for adolescents who have drug and/or alcohol problems, and students who have school violations or court orders or are simply self referred or brought to us by a concerned parent. We also work with youth who have been referred to us for threat assessments

There were significant changes in the State Human Services and Social Services Departments. The move to treat co-occurring disorders prompted changes with the Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse. This Division has been moved to the Department of Social Services. This affected how clients with addictions and those with mental health disorders will recieve services. This also had an impact on how providers of these services will operate in the future. I would be glad to share my views about this move for anyone that may be interested.

Since 2002 I have been the State Coordinator for The Methamphetamine Awareness and Prevention Project of South Dakota. I have managed over 2 million dollars in Federal Grants from the Department of Justice. These grants were made available to provide education and train citizens and professionals about the dangers of meth use, production and property remediation of lab sites. I have personally presented to or trained thousands of South Dakotans on this issue.

Because of my work I have not only the small business experience, I also have a working understanding of the non-profit organizations we partner with every day.
